Cat painter Carl Kahler

This Austrian born artist amazes me with his incredible vigour, thirst for life. Despite having a highly successful career in his native country, Carl Kahler decides to take his art to the other end of the earth – to Australia . Achieving recognition there he doesn't rest on laurels. Just 5 years later, in 1891 he moves to America , San Francisco and opens the studio there and yet again – success follows him. What an adventurous spirit!

Apparently he had a go at various styles although cats brought him most of his fame. I have just discovered his abstract piece from 1939 on the Illinois State museum website. He must have been over 80 when he did it but still he seems to be eagerly the new age of the machines. We don't know much about Carl Kahler as a person apart from one description of him as an “erratic genius” who destroys his work once he lost interest in it.

You might think that having found such a warm welcome in the USA and reaching a respectable age he would finally settle. Not quite so! Historians lost his trail back in Paris where he once studied. Amazing personality, deserving every bit of the collectors interest he enjoyed at the moment.
