Try as I Might

As I was pondering the meaning of things
As I angrily thought of the cruelty of things
As I sadly thought of the finality of things
As I helplessly thought of how little I really know;
My two cats were lying by my floor to ceiling window
The sun was illuminating their shiny coats
And one of them looked at me,
Purred with worry less content
And then fell asleep.
His companion on the other hand
Followed a group of pelicans
They fly by us every afternoon,
And he responds, every day, with pure excitement,
As though this was the first time they were ever there.
The sun was fast approaching the horizon
Like she has done for billions of years
And the planet was slowly spinning on its axis
As it has done since the beginning of time.
I bent over and petted my cats;
And I found refuge in the constancy of things
And I found refuge in the simplicity of things
And I sadly accepted the inevitability of things
But try as I might,
None of my findings,
Nor my acceptance
Mitigated the brutality of my knowledge
Of my passing being.

Her Cat

She came home, her cat at the door
she came home he jumped in her arms
she came home his soft head resting against her shoulders
his eyes full of dreams.

She is home he thinks and puts his chin against her cheek
she is home he thinks to love me,
he curls in her arms, trusting
he purrs so deeply so content.

I came home she thinks, there is my cat, waiting
I opened the door there he awaits, my beloved friend
he jumps in my arms, and whispers in my ears
stories of birds who flew by his window;
he followed them as far as he could see.

He tells her about his fears; maybe you left me,
he purrs so deeply so content
he follows her through the apartment
he rubs against her legs
then they went to sleep
him and her sharing a pillow.

In the morning they will watch the sunrise
the sun over the Atlantic
they both watch in silence
his eyes fill with sadness
when she leaves for the day.
