Cat art by Louis Wain

Being a cat artist I get attracted to all sorts of information about “my” subject. Recently I discovered for myself Louis Wain, the Victorian artist who made an illustrious career drawing humorous, human-like cats of all shapes and colours. Although his style is quite far from mine his art is very entertaining. It's fun to loose yourself studying his cartoons in all their numerous details. Victorians couldn't get enough of them. His fame is still going strong today.

In Louis Wain's pictures we can have a glimpse of the long gone era through the insider eyes. I find this fascinating. Scenes of the everyday life of the end of the 19 th century England come alive in the sweet funny way.

I think he was a very kind man. He supported a number of animal charities and probably never has been happy in his private life.

His beloved wife died only three years after their marriage and ever since he lived with his mother and sister. And how awful was the end of his life – he developed a schizophrenia and spent many long years in mental hospital, suffering from the wild mood swings and drawing, drawing, drawing increasingly abstract images of cats which are creepy to look at.

On the brighter note Louis Wain has made it into the history. His name and his art lives on which is the ambition of any artist. Here's what his fan, the write Herbert Wells said about him: “ He has made the cat his own. He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. English cats that do not look and live like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves."
